Boat Wake and Propeller Wash Impacts on Minnesota Lakes

Jun 16th, 04:00 PM EST

Impacts from wakes have long been a concern for lake users. Wakes too close to shore and in shallow waters can create safety hazards, cause shoreline erosion, damage docks, degrade water quality, and jeopardize loon nests. This talk will give an overview of preliminary results from the first year of a three-year, crowd-funded study in Minnesota that seeks to characterize boat-generated waves from large recreational watercraft common to Minnesota including wake surfing boats. This research effort has focused on lake shore environments typical of Minnesota, but the results will be germane to anyone looking to gather more information about the long-term impacts of larger wakes on lakes and ponds.
