The Department of Environment, Great Lakes, and Energy’s Interactive Maps for

Water Clarity, AIS, and E. coli

AIS Plant Map

Utilizing the EGLE-developed Aquatic Vegetation Assessment Sites (AVAS) survey techniques, the Aquatic Nuisance Control (ANC) program recorded the aquatic plant communities of selected water bodies across the state of Michigan. This map reveals the distribution of sites across the years of the technique’s usage within the Water Resource Division. Its intent is to equip community members with the first steps toward greater knowledge of their local water bodies and connect them to ANC resources.

Water Clarity Map

The Michigan Lake Water Clarity dashboard (MiLakeClarity) contains satellite-derived data for lake clarity, lake algal biomass, and lake color as indicators of water quality. Remote sensing data from the Sentinel 2 satellite were analyzed for all ponded waterbodies in Michigan greater than 20 surface acres. Lake data from the images were analyzed for the ice-free season from May through October for each year. This Dashboard features a searchable statewide map of lake clarity (in meters), algal biomass as chlorophyll concentrations (in µg/L), and lake color as colored dissolved organic matter (CDOM, in absorbance at 440 nanometers). Lake-level maps of these three parameters can be displayed for the late summer seasonal average (July through October) for 2023, with options to focus the search area on the map by county, ecoregion, and hydrologic unit code (HUC).

E. coli Map

This interactive map consolidates the layers and features of the topic-specific maps (E. coli Monitoring and Impaired Waters, Nonpoint Sources, NPDES Discharges, and Solutions). This allows users to view multiple types of potential E. coli sources near you, along with monitoring locations, and other available information. Access and download all data on EGLE’s Open Data Portal.
